10 Posts, and I haven’t overtaken Dave Jones in popularity yet. I’m clearly doing something wrong! Maybe I should change something…what about “let’s not complain”…for today? ;)

Really, I cannot gripe about today’s review item even though it actually is pretty far away from advertised. I have ordered a set of 0805 SMD resistors via AliExpress for the extremely high price of 3.87 Euros including shipping (that was actually back in January 2016 – stuff piles up!).

Sure, entire reels of 0805 resistors cost measly 10 Euros for 5000 pieces (1%), that’s next to nothing per unit. But I don’t need 5k resistors of one type and reels take some space. I’d very much prefer 500 pieces of ten different types…or, like here, 123 variations and just 10 of them each. If I have the need for more of a specific type, I can always order again. But who doesn’t know the pain if you need a specific resistor value and have to make it from two other resistors by paralleling up or putting them in series…

I actually don’t have much use for SMD stuff at home, but the next blog will be about why I need about 10 different SMD resistors for a specific project. And buying such a set was actually much cheaper and easier than buying small quantities of 10 values individually. I will put the rest of them to stock, as they are SMD without the reel, they won’t occupy much space.

..so that’s over 7 decades of resistance. Holy moly!

What did I get? Well..I said I wouldn’t complain. I got a mix, but a slightly different one. I couldn’t give a rat’s arse about the exact composition as long as the major E6 were in there. But I had some fun actually measuring one piece of every stripe while watching YouTube, checking the 1% spec – which was fulfilled by ALL of them, so clearly they either sold me 1% resistors or I should start playing the lottery.
I also noted down the time, and it took me a whopping 49 minutes just
* reading the label of each stripe (clearly several different handwritings, some do like 1K5, some 1.5K, all do 1K instead of 1K0)
* turning it around (they write on the paper back, not on the foil front – a decent pen would cost more, I guess)
* poking in two multimeter leads
* thinking about the expected ±1% extremal values until the multimeter settles
* get the reading
* nod affirmative
* and put it onto a pile of the same decade.

So for (spoiler alert!) 128 strips that is roughly 23 seconds a piece – I am very lucky that I did that for fun and that I’m not sitting in the Wan Hung Lo factory day in, day out, doing that for a living. Moreover, I’m writing this article in advance, and today is actually a holiday, the Assumption of Mary. This is one of the more interesting ones, as it is only a holiday in 2 of the 16 federal states of Germany, and every municipality decides individually if it is a holiday, based on the percentage of (holy moly) catholic citizens – 1704 of them do, 352 don’t.

So again, what did I get? 128 stripes, that’s 5 more than advertised. However, there are 6 duplicates (10R, 150R, 2K7, 5K1, 1M, 2M), which means there are only 122 different types. Fine by me ;)
The following ones are missing: 56R, 91R, 430R, 560R, 750R, 910R, 1K2, 3K3
The following ones are present although not advertised: 130R, 360R, 1K3, 75K, 130K, 680K, 5M6

So for short of 4 Euros…perfect. And appalling how cheap Chinese labor must be, every stripe is clearly cut and labelled by hand, which means that each of these tasks can cost a maximum of one cent :wacko:
