Important correction on Samsung 970 Evo Plus revisions (WHL #106F1)

“Houston, we got a problem….the fake news detector just went off!”

THE WHAT?

In all seriousness, my previous post contained a factual error. One that I discovered after spending my own money to specifically buy two 970 Evo Plus SSDs of the new revision. Two brand new ones to be precise (wouldn’t really call it NOS, but eBay is currently full of unopened late 2023 drives for very close to street prices, not sure what’s going on), so the seller only posted pictures of the package with fully intact seal. And when I opened it earlier this week…well, two “old” ones popped out.

So here’s an important addition to the last post: Buying a new, sealed SSD up to and including date of manufacture of 07/2023 in the newer portrait box will not guarantee the newer SSD revision with the Elpis controller. Samsung did make the old board parallel to the newer version from early 2021 to at least up to 07/2023.

Image of the boxes:

And corresponding SSDs (two center slots), notice both serial numbers match except the last letter (R/T), which might be a check digit of some sort.

They do show up with firmware revision 2B2QEXM7, which is marked as “up to date” in the Samsung Magician software, so they are the first revision indeed…
