MicroQR scanner phone apps (#R23)

I’m not reeeeally into app recommendations, but that one bothered me for a long time…so here it goes:

For all your barcode needs on a mobile phone: Use the Cognex scanner! Available here for Androids and there for low hanging fruit.

Why the recommendation? Because, for reasons unknown to me, no standard camera app on both systems, nor any other barcode app that I could find for Android does support MicroQR codes. Basically everybody does Code 128 and 39, some do weirder stuff like interleaved 2-of-5, and 2D apps often support things like standard QR, Datamatrix or Aztec. […]

DOOGEE S98 PRO, again (WHL #82F1)

Told ya I was busy – 404, no content found (not even canned one).

Since having no phone is not an option, and porting everything to LineageOS (and back…some day) is also surprisingly difficult, I sold the Samsung Galaxy A3 2016 backup phone with said LOS overhaul on eBay (for decent money!) and got another Doogee S98 Pro. Return on Amazon was painless, and delivery of the new one from a Chinese seller with German warehouse was also a breeze. Let’s just hope I never have to return anything to this “nanchangkuachuodianzishangwuyouxiangongsi” dude in “pengtangzhenyingbinzhongdadao399haoguang heyuanzhuzhaiqu 1dong1danyuan 1204shi 330200 nanchangjiangxisheng nanchangxian” – is that even real, or a running joke of Chinese sellers on eBay? 3D garbage model creation with your phone (WHL #61)

Virtual product review for today – an Android app that promises 3D model generation from just a bunch of photos. Extreme spoiler (yes, keyword placement for Google): It doesn’t work, and charging for it is basically a scam. It’s called Scann3D and it is brought to you by a company called SmartMobileVision in Hungary with a defunct website.

Ready for a quick marketing wank?

Scann3D deploys patent pending photogrammetry technology to enable true 3D model capture and reconstruction for smartphones and tablets. Your device becomes a standalone tool to turn images into 3D models – all your images are processed by and on it.

CAT S60 boot loop fix (#P17F1)

Good fucking Lord, that was a ride.
Last Sunday, my phone went out of juice and failed to come back to life. I had some issues with VERY high standby power consumption the entire week before, which caused the 3.8Ah battery to go flat within a work day. And so it did on Sunday when nobody was using it and nobody cared.

Long story short: A friggen weather app created an invalid (cron?) job, which caused the OS to reset indefinitely.

Long version: Boys and girls, root your phones. Even if some idiot banks (1822direkt, *cough*) will block you from running their apps “for security reasons”, having the option to fully backup and restore your phone outweighs that by far. […]

Failed Philips 46PFL8008S/12 display repair (#P15)

And now for the thing that didn’t make it #100 ;)

A while back, I was donated my second “defective” TV, a 46″ Philips 46PFL8008S/12 with the large ambilight (left/2x top/right with 9 LEDs each). Unlike my first donor which pretty much suffered a direct lightning strike (as described in rant #R2), this one turned on just fine. What’s wrong with it, why would you give away a former 1500€+ device?

(bonus brownie points if you can name the show currently displayed here!)

Well, story is this poor fella cracked a glass table. […]

Luxury Wirst Watch Bluetooth Watch U8 Smartwatch Digital Sport Watches for Apple IOS Android phone Wearable Electronic Devices (WHL #24)

Dave Jones sometimes sniffs when he senses bullshit. I’ve got a strange sensation too, I feel a wank incoming…

Today’s item is something that I ordered for a friend. It cost 8.29€ on AliExpress (back in January 2017, and that was the second attempt), and I actually ordered two of them. What do you need two watches for? I don’t know. Probably for salvaging parts… ;)

I don’t usually refrain from buying something that might turn out crappy. After all, if it’s total bullshit, I can always ask for a refund and show some disintegration pictures to prove my claim. […]
