It’s been a while, and aside from being busy editing and uploading metric shittons of Beach Buggy Racing videos (as of today spanning until the last week of December, on a two-day-release cycle)…

…I have also pondered my options regarding the air duster. I wanna know if this thing really hits 150krpm with all the cheap battery, power electronics, bearings and whatever else is involved. 150krpm for such an inexpensive device sounds so alien to me.

Luckily, we do have a high-speed camera at work. It’s more of a microscope, but zooming in and not having the full air blast onto the lenses might be a good idea regardless. […]

This is puzzling.

Around two months ago, I bought one of these electric (cordless) air dusters. I do technically own some pressurized air equipment (14l tank, 12V pump and manual pump), but it’s always bulky and inconvenient to use. Since battery technology has advanced so much over the last couple of years…some nifty dude invented the server fan on a 18650. And aside from actually filling things up with a defined pressure, that’s basically good enough for most tasks that mainly consist of “dusting things off” needs. […]

The LSI 9300-16i cards have gotten surprisingly cheap over the past months. Dirt cheap, in fact. All-16 port SAS cards are traditionally pretty pricey, even though they are “just” two 8-port cards on one PCB. In the past 10, maybe 15 years, there was never a time when buying a 16-port card (used or new) was cheaper than buying two 8s. Sure, sometimes people needed a single-card solution (availability of PCIe slots, PCIe lanes, or space in general), but the usual recommendation for 16-bay chassis like my Supermicro 836 was always to buy 2×8 instead of 1×16. The slightly more silent Ender 5 Plus (#E21F3)

Well, since the printer is running just fine, I used it to make some quality-of-life upgrades to it.
The bottom lid that covers PSU, all the mains wiring and the rest of the electronics has been removed and replaced by a 2 part print (due to size). Several reasons for that: a) Four of the six screws are covered by the additional aluminium frame, so it’s difficult to remove if properly fastened, b) if left unscrewed (which isn’t much of a load problem on the remaining two screws since it is sandwiched anyway), the ends of the large metal piece would be free to vibrate and resonate, c) the stock 40mm fan close to the driver board is terribly noisy and pointless in terms of air throughput, so I would have swapped it anyway. Post #100 HP 6644A refurbishment (#P14)

Not that anybody cares, but this is actually post number 100 already. I prepared something else that failed (to be reported!), so this one has to do instead ;)

My “lab” power supply situation is ageing and often no longer up to the task, think of LEDs north of 35V or anything that takes more than one amp at voltages that cannot be provided with common computer supplies (3.3V, 5V, 12V, 19/20V) easily. So this is part one of the refresh.
