NEW LSI 9300-16i 12Gbps SAS-3 PCIe x8 HBA P16 IT mode ZFS TrueNAS UNRAID (WHL #94)

Here’s a quick and simple one: Cooling advice for 16-port SAS cards.

The LSI 9300-16i cards have gotten surprisingly cheap over the past months. Dirt cheap, in fact. All-16 port SAS cards are traditionally pretty pricey, even though they are “just” two 8-port cards on one PCB. In the past 10, maybe 15 years, there was never a time when buying a 16-port card (used or new) was cheaper than buying two 8s. Sure, sometimes people needed a single-card solution (availability of PCIe slots, PCIe lanes, or space in general), but the usual recommendation for 16-bay chassis like my Supermicro 836 was always to buy 2×8 instead of 1×16. Thermalright True Spirit 120 Rev. A BW 4U fan mount rebuild (#P29)

Technically the second step to the Fujitsu Esprimo board modification in #P28, but not necessary for regular ATX cases that are just big enough to fit a tower cooler, especially nowadays. Well, I always got special problems with my special builds, so I needed to address that.

With the Intel board mount, the Thermalright True Spirit 120 sits ever so slightly higher up in the case compared to the AMD one. It not only interferes with the card holder which is fixed by drilling two more holes in it, but the appended fan holder also touches the case lid. […]

100W Aluminum Power Metal Shell Case Wirewound Resistor ±5% 0.1R 0.5R 1R 2R 6R 8R 10R 20R 100R 1K ohm Aluminium Shell Resistor – Dummy load project (WHL #56)

Something very basic for today: Resistors. Yaay.

I was tasked with troubleshooting a Blu-Ray player that cut the sound a few minutes into movies repeatedly. Sounds like a thermal issue to me, and after the local electronics shop grabbed 35 bucks for an “inspection”, yielding a “motherboard issue” which makes this Samsung heap of sh.. a total loss, it was given to me for a last look into it, before it was tossed. Of course the owner would never buy a Samsung player again, as this high-end model played Blu-Rays just fine, but does refuse to do so with double-layer DVDs, which his previous Samsung DVD player was absolutely capable of. Hacker Eco-X TopFuel 5000mAh 6S 111Wh 20C LiPo battery pack (WHL #31)

Hey! What’s the thing that this blog needs the most?

Yep! Another battery post!

So, last one of the big lithium batteries today. We have a Hacker (nice brand name!) “TopFuel LiPo 20C-ECO-X 5000mAh 6S” unit. I think this could be the first item to carry an EAN number (4250320228615) on the label – and it very well might be the first one where the manufacturer that directly sells these puppies (for 93€ a piece) does not appear on the first 100 Google results on exactly this number. That’s a pretty shitty rank for a manufacturer AND a web shop, I have to say…

I’m also not sure about the technical details on the shop page. […]

modellbaufuchs 26650 6S2P 4.6Ah LiFePO4 battery pack with balancer port (WHL #29)

And another one. I’ll churn these battery reviews out once per week now, even though I said I would rather go biweekly. It’s not much extra effort – charging, discharging and then plotting the data has to be done anyway, taking some extra photos and waffling on about it on my blog is a plus.

So this week’s item is a 6S2P battery pack, LiFePO4, rated at 4.6Ah. It’s from modellbaufuchs, which I just visited in preparation for this post. Not sure if they are still in business, as their latest news item on the page dates back to early 2015. […]

A beefy electronic load (#P4F1)

Well, that was a long week…actually, it was a fortnight ;)

Here we go!

(the alignment of images really sucks when placed near the header of the post – thanks WordPress!)

So this puppy was manufactured by my new friends over at OSH Park (ordinary order, no extras) and I think I hit the express jackpot. I registered on June 8th and submitted my files – three hours later (1 AM my time on Friday) I already got notice of the panel assignment. Maybe the small size of 54mm x 31mm (2.1″ by 1.2″ for the Yankees out there) just made a perfect fit on the remaining board size and they sent it straight to production ;) As OSH Park charges 5 dollars per square inch of board area (for three units!), […]

Müller Licht 5.5W/220-240V/50Hz/38mA/470lm/2700K/dimmable/E14 EB1500665 40036 (WHL #12F2)

Well, I guess I was onto something when I first complained about the failed E14 LED bulb back in WHL #12
Not only did the second one (out of four) die as shown in the followup #1, but now the third one is dead as well. And, which is my favourite part, the replacement for it was almost DOA as well. It blinks every few second and never fully turns on. What a heap of garbage!

So naturally I complained again ( ) , and the guys from voelkner played the cheapest “shut up” card possible – they did a complete refund of the four initial light bulbs without any further questions asked. […]
