Kitchen Egg Timer Boiled Soft Hard Medium Color Changing Boiled Hourglass JAPAN (WHL #19)

Look, we’re steering off track…even fewer electronic parts than in the last slimy post! We’re back to the steam era!

I’m not planning to become an universal gadget tester, but I had to check this one which was in today’s mail. I got it from eBay merely two weeks ago and I paid 4.99 USD for it, including economy shipping. And now I’m a proud owner of some Nippon stamp worth 180 Yen, which in itself is around 1.5 USD. I didn’t buy on Ali this time because they only offer generic or German “Pearl” branded items (go figure). […]

Adroit High-Tech Magic Sticky Jelly Compound Super Clean Slimy Gel Computer PC Laptop (WHL #18)

After the hard facts of the last Wan Hung Lo post, let’s get a little softer, a little more slimy…and gross. You’ve been warned ;)

Today’s item is some cleaning gel that I bought at the end of January on AliExpress for 1.36€ including shipping. I’m not even sure how it is called, the package is mostly non-latin characters, but apparently it’s from “Super Clean Europe”…guess the Asian versions have more funky colorings added to them.

I cannot spot any weight, amount, volume marking on the bag, maybe the “80” on the bottom indicates 80g. […]

USB detector 3.0 High voltage 4 bit OLED QC 2.0 Digital detector voltmeter ammeter voltage current power capacity tester meter (WHL #17)

New at Wan Hung Lo:

…wait, what?

(I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to find my address if you want to, just making it a little harder for google to index it as an image…)

So, what is it actually? Sure, it’s the USB power meter from the blog title. Who would have thought!
Bloody kids with USB 3 toys! Back in my days, we had…umm, good old RS-232

I bought this one month ago at AliExpress for 8,61€ including shipping. As you can see, they decided to use some tracked mailing instead of the “ah, no worries” cheapo variant. […]

Müller Licht 5.5W/220-240V/50Hz/38mA/470lm/2700K/dimmable/E14 EB1500665 40036 (WHL #12F1)

Another one bites the dust :suspect:

Three months after the failed E14 LED light bulb in WHL #12, the second unit (out of four) died. It came back to life a few times (a few seconds each), and I reckon now the magic smoke has finally escaped.

All of the remaining bulbs show this distinct yellow shading on the diffusion globe. The replacement one still looks white, like shown in the previous post. But this one clearly failed…look at it, I think it sneezed one single LED off the board. Bless you! […]

USB 3.0 Type A Male to Type A Male M-M Coupler Adapter Gender Changer Connector Pro New (WHL #16)

…also sold as Blue USB 3.0 A Male to Male Extension Converter Adapter USB Connector Gender Changer Coupler For Pc Laptop and tons of other variations.

Remember the USB 3.0 keystone module from WHL #13? Yep, it can get worse than that.

I’ve always kept USB gender changers handy to connect weird and wonderful combinations of devices, including measurement contraptions e.g. for current tests. With the advent of USB 3.0 (with classic A plugs, I don’t have any USB type-C devices yet), I needed to slowly upgrade my gear to do such measurements in USB 3 mode. […]

20cm 8″ inch ATX 4 Pin Male to 4Pin Female PC CPU Power Supply Extension Cable Cord Connector Adapter (WHL #14F1 – first follow-up)

Triple-follow-up to the WHL #14 article about the 4-Pin extension cables for desktop computer mainboards.

Since publishing the article, I managed to order two more cables from CHAINA, two different sellers, with very similar product description. At the end of January, both have arrived and have been tested immediately.
Aaand, what do you know, both were the very same make as already shown in #14. Both failed with clouds of smoke when putting 5 amps or more on them, and of course I started disputes for both of them (one pending, one resulted in a quick refund). […]

Micro USB V8 Cable 2016 High Quality New Arrival Nice Black White Colors USB Car Charger (WHL #15)

Hello again!

Today, I have something springy for you. A powerful car charger for two of your favourite electronics!

…except I broke it during first use  Prepare for some Wan Hung Lo qualitty goodness!

I bought this fine piece of equipment for 2.48€ at AliExpress back in November. And I got my money back.

Notice something? Well…the center pin looks a bit…retracted. But first things first. As I have a matching car receptacle to test such things with lab equipment instead of doing measurements in the car, I first tried the charger at my lab power supply. […]

7 decade thumbwheel resistor box (project #P1)

A while ago, I wrote articles about a bargain SMD resistor set (WHL #10 ) as well as some thumbwheel switches (WHL #11). Let’s start fresh in 2017 and present the final box :)

As already shown in the thumbwheel post, the initial resistor placement wasn’t perfect. I fiddled some more and I got a case and nice 4mm banana plugs for it. First, let’s see the final measurement results, done with a calibrated Keithley 2700 6 1/2 digit DMM in 4-Wire (Kelvin) mode.

Original performance:

Final performance:

Yep, the 1Ω data point still violates the 1%/10000ppm spec (1,9%). […]

2016 New 8″ inch ATX 4 Pin Male to 4Pin Female PC CPU Power Supply Extension Cable Cord Connector Adapter 1PC Hot 20cm (WHL #14)

Religious holidays, you gotta love them. Short (pun intended) review today: A plain old power extension cable for your PC, one of the 12V supply cables to the motherboard. I don’t really know why I ordered it back in January, but I guess it was in preparation for upgrading one of the 19″ cases as a gaming rig. Which hasn’t been built yet, because the bloody display manufacturers only ship crappy 3440×1440 displays with ridiculous FreeSync ranges..or even without. In 2016! It’s not rocket science!

So, what do we have? […]

Keystone USB 3.0 A Female To Female Jack Module Adapter Converter Power Socket (WHL #13)

My new desk has some extension cables running underneath to provide data and also power conveniently on one end. I decided to use a 19″ 1U “KeyStone” patch panel because I like the variety and modular nature of these adapters. Well, things like HDMI (or even this DisplayPort voodoo!) are hard to find in China, and 4mm banana plug keystones and audio jacks are basically the same price over here. But USB seems very common – so why not buy an USB 3.0 keystone from the Wan Hung Lo factory?

So I did. This arrived not too long ago:

The front dimensions are standardized to 15x17mm. […]
